Musical Chairs



Over the past year here at ye ol' jobby job, my managers have been playing musical chairs ("I'm no longer your manager".."He's your manager now"..."I'm your manager again"...back to "I'm not longer you manager") so now I'm trying to get my second manager, twice removed, to come back to my team.

How about that show eh? I couldn't believe they played "You All Everybody" by Driveshaft. My observation was that me and Niki were the only ones stoked about it.

So Pitchfork (my anonymous reader's favorite webzine) put out their top 50 of 2005. Even more sub-par than last years list. I know I went on about Kanye West's CD when it came out, but it is no where near being the second best album of the year. Also on their list is Love is All's album that isn't coming out until January 2006. Even though they are a fucking rad band, I'm not sure how that works. Maybe they mean it's one of the best free promos of 2005? (Check out their labels Myspace profile (with super crappy, choppy mp3s that make you want more. It's almost painful!!!))))))))

Television Personalities Prep First Album in 11 Years!

Matthew Solarski reports:
Post-punk has bred few sons more enigmatic, charismatic and straight-up erratic than Mr. Dan Treacy, frontman for the Television Personalities. And even fewer more endearing. When Treacy miraculously resurfaced last year after serving jail time on a British prison boat (allegedly for burglary), TVP acolytes the world over rejoiced, and when Treacy went on to declare he'd "written [his] best and most meaningful music of the last couple years" and wanted to release a new record, those acolytes wet themselves with glee. Championed by Kurt Cobain, John Peel, Jens Lekman, and Creation Records founder Alan McGee among others, the Television Personalities exert a lifetime hold over those whose lives they touch. And that jolly lot is about to grow with exponential furor.

Domino Records recently announced that they will release the fruit of Treacy's foreshadowing, entitled My Dark Places, on February 27 in the UK and March 7 in North America. It will be the first record of new Television Personalities material in eleven long years. Fixin' for a taster? Domino drops the first single on February 6, the oh-so-cheekily-entitled "All The Young Children On Smack, All The Young Children On Crack". Featuring a cover of the Who's "All Love Is Good Love" on the b-side, the song was inspired in part by Pete Doherty. We jest not.

My Dark Places was recorded with Simon Trought at London's Soup Studio. A press release proclaims the record is "as sad as it is uplifting, as gentile as it is noisy", and says that Treacy penned the entire album while serving his prison boat sentence. We could invoke any number of prison-related jokes here, but we're on a sincerity kick of late. Must be the season.

Dan Treacy's blog, which totters rather amusingly between precocious brilliance and unnerving hysteria, features allusions to a U.S. tour in 2006. Until those glorious dates arrive, UK denizens may shake their bums to Treacy's selections at this Friday's "How Does It Feel To Be Loved?" event at London's Phoenix, where Dan will work the decks:

The weekend was great, even after the awkward encounter on the light-rail Sunday afternoon.

The "Halloween" show was like no other.
Del Taco saved me from being hung-over the next morning.

Charles's new band is pretty fun, but there needs to be a new venue to replace the Distillery. I'm starting to feel the same way about it as I do with Old I. Also, this town is in serious need of some new-good bands. For now I'll settle for a new mixed drink.

New mixed drink:
The French Connection
2 parts cognac
1 part amaretto almond liqueur

Pour ingredients into a old-fashioned glass over ice, stir, and serve.

Firstly is the "Decemberween" show happening somewhere this Friday (That attic place on 26th where the zombie/fetus movie set is located?). I kinda regret pussing out on doing James Taylor, but the second comment (and by "second" I mean "third") on heckasac is kinda why I bowed out (Is it really going to fucking happen?)

Too busy to post



One of the hardest things to do is get back into work mode after taking a week or more off from the job.

As you can see, my blog is going through some changes. I wont make any promises when it will happen, but sooner than later codemonkey should be looking better. The old template I was using had to go.

Enchilada Day was great (sorry, I don't eat turkey), you can read all about it on tiny clanger's blog.

Friday Niki and I lucked out and managed to sneak into Old I to see Knock Knock, so we felt no obligation to stay around and see the next two bands. We were in and out of there in 1.5 hours. All I can say is that (Knock)^2 is one of the best bands, local or otherwise. It was great to see the large turn out, and I'm glad they got paid, even though I didn't contribute to the fund (but I did contribute to the fun).

Saturday was the Daisy Spot/Naners show. I haven't seen Daisy spot in years, so it was nice to finally be able to make it out to see them. I think DS is a great band, but they need to weed out some of the sillier songs and shorten their set a bit. I had to go outside about midway through, mainly because I had to pee like a racehorse, but also because I was becoming worn down. Bananas rocked, and it was probably one of their better shows in a while.

Afterparty consisted mainly of one round of "bump-it or dump-it", Listening to rare Orange Juice 7"s and feeling woozy from too much weird tasting brews.

My two favorite new shows on TV right now are Wonder Showzen and the Colbert Report.

MTV always tries to screw with me by making W.S. start 15 minutes late, thus messing up my Tivo settings (yes, I'm on that bandwagon now). Anyhow, I'll definitely get it as soon as it comes out on DVD. That way I can try to convert friends and family into fans the same way I do with Curb.

Steven Colbert: The man is a damn genius, and his show is almost as twisted as Wonder Showzen (and is on every weekday, on time no less). "George Bush: Great president, or the greatest president?"

This weekend I went to Discovery park for the first time (other than passing through while traveling from my old house in DPH to downtown via the bike path). First off, don't drive there. It costs 4 bucks to park. The park has so much potential, but that cost alone cancels all my plans for holding any sort of future event there. Obviously I'm not the only one who thinks that way, since me, Niki, Heylove and a work-project cleanup crew were the only ones out there on such a nice Sunday afternoon. Oh..there were some crack-rock bags hanging out there as well. It's so huge and open, which makes it a shame.

Fat Tub of Goo



So I annually renewed my gym membership over the weekend. It was 99 bucks for a a whole year, which sounds like a great deal, but I only went like 5 times. That works out to be around 20 dollars per visit to the gym. Not such a hot deal after all!

So these are the kinds of things you start to think about once you hit 30. Heart disease and just about every other bad ailment runs in my family, so it's a matter of life and death when it comes to exercise for me. My high-fiber vegetarian lifestyle means nothing if I sit around being a couch potato all weekend long after my long week of sitting behind a desk at work. I'll still keel over in my 50s from a heart attack if I keep going down that route.

So a lot of you might think I'm silly for promoting these kind of things, but hey, they actually work. Just this Morning I got a reply about my letter concerning the broadcasting flag from U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein! (from her office, anyway)

So those WBs I had Friday night seemed to effect me the whole weekend. All that money I had been saving by not going out to eat went to:

1 dinner at Tres Hermanas
1 breakfast at F n' G


I tried making it up by cooking a giant pot of my signature split-pea soup yesterday afternoon, which came out bombtastic, as usual.

I'll be taking Dan to the airport Wednesday, but we are going to stop at Cornerstone on the way there for his final final meal in Sacramento, for reals this time.

Dear Quiznos marketing genius,

Just the other day while driving past a site where a future Quiznos establishment is being built (on Alhambra and Broadway in sunny Sacramento CA), I had a moment of brilliance which caused me to come up with a new slogan and advertising idea for Quiznos.

It's a play on words, so it takes some, but not very much brain power.

Quiznos - "what you want"

OK, so that may seem bland at first, but it gets even more ingenious.

Say you have a mascot named Quiz who is a "know-it-all" or a "fortune teller" (you could have an artist come up with a new character, or maybe have one of the singing hamsters, or that baby with the man's voice be the character named "Quiz").

The know-it-all could be a somewhat annoying, yet loveable character who thinks he or she knows the answer to everything (somewhat like "comic book guy" from The Simpsons), yet in reality, Quiz gets all the facts messed up. Quiz will say funny things like "Did you know Abraham Lincoln was the fifth president? That's why he's on the five dollar bill!" and you could have another character ague with Quiz and respond "Ummm...no... Lincoln was the sixteenth president..." and they could go back and forth like that until the announcer in the commercial states "Quiz knows what you want". (Quiznos...What you want).

Another idea is that the character Quiz could be a psychic who tries to tell people their fortunes, but never gets it quite right, whether it be some far-fetched idea, or something impossible (like telling an amputee that he or she will grow arms, or something a bit more politically correct), and towards the end of the commercial Quiz will allude to something more feasible: "You are going to eat some food today at around noon...I'm seeing a toasty concoction of meat and cheese..." and the person getting the fortune from Quiz the fortune teller will look amazed and say something like "wow! How did you know?!?!? I am heading over to Quiznos at lunch today!"....Quiznos...what you want.

Just a portion of many brilliant ideas of mine. Let me know if you are interested in using some of them.

Give the Broadcast Flag a TKO

We have the Broadcast Flag on the ropes, but its supporters are flailing back. The Broadcast Flag, a plan to give Hollywood remote control of how you record, copy, transfer, or replay over-the-air digital television, was knocked flat by the courts.

Now the film and TV industries are running to Congress to get the fix in.

The current plan: sneak a few lines of innocuous-sounding law past legislators to give the FCC the sweeping regulatory authority it needs re-instate the Flag. That would restore Hollywood's power to dictate the design of any digital equipment capable of receiving broadcasts - and once again, technology innovators would be forced to beg permission to provide you with the features and functionality for exercising your fair use rights.

The lawyers and lobbyists are moving fast, but you can move faster. Tell your representative you don't want Hollywood to hobble your digital media devices, and knock out the Broadcast Flag for good.

Last night's 4-eyes “live” recording was a blast. Not at all what I (or anyone else not “in-the-know” expected). So if you weren’t there, it’s all live as far as you’re concerned…ok?

During the first round of “live” recording, the audience was pretty quiet, probably because most participants were too busy laughing their asses off and not being drunk enough, except for maybe smiller (when you listen to the recording and hear a whole lot of “WHOOOOOOOOOOOOO” towards the beginning, that’s him!)

As the first round of crowd recording progressed, people became a little drunker and a little more energetic (when you hear that crazy sounding dude towards the end yelling “SAM MALONE!!!!” that’s me! I even yelled it out the window at some business casual dudes crossing the street on the way home and now I feel stupid for it).

Second round started off with full audience participation since the people who had been present for round one knew all the choruses, but the energy seemed to taper off after “working out with weights”. People drifted out of the loft and into the alley by then, which worked out, since the last two songs were supposed to be the anti-hits (we were indicated to yell “BOOOO!” for both of them).

Funniest song of the evening: “I should have walked around” not only for the lyrics, but also for the “My Girl” guitar riff.

Other stand out hits: “A 57 Chevy”, “Working out with weights” and some other song that I can’t remember right now due to that nauseous feeling in my stomach you get after a night of PBR and other cheap beers.

Here is one of my favorite stories of all time (from the National Geographic website):

The ancient Sumerians, who built advanced city-states in the area of present-day Iraq, began fermenting beer from barley at least 6,000 years ago.

"When people started agriculture the first crops they produced were barley or wheat. You consume those crops as bread and as beer," Standage noted. "It's the drink associated with the dawn of civilization. It's as simple as that."

Beer was popular with the masses from the beginning.

"Beer would have been something that a common person could have had in the house and made whenever they wanted," said Linda Bisson, a microbiologist at the Department of Viticulture and Enology at the University of California, Davis.

"The guys who built the pyramids were paid in beer and bread," Standage added. "It was the defining drink of Egypt and Mesopotamia. Everybody drank it. Today it's the drink of the working man, and it was then as well."

Some songs we just hear and never think about too much. I'm sure other's have had this discussion.

So I'm listening to the online 80's station here at work, and that terrible song "Yah Mo B There" comes on. We've all heard it a million times. So WHAT THE HELL IS A 'YAH MO' and why does he, she, or it have to "B there"?

Just wondering.

If the song was about the legendary Yah Mos, I could understand. I wish they would B here. How fucking great would that be?
