Sacramento Pride

Almost everyone in Sacramento has a certain sense of town-pride, mainly because our town gets shit on by everyone else who overlooks the pluses of living here. So with that in mind, you can see how stoked I was to see Sacramento get a shout-out on boingboing today (one of my favorite time-wasters and sources of "useful" info).

You have to admit, Sacramento has a serious identity crisis and there's a culturual battle constantly going on here. The people who throw up cheaply made (though not in cost, in taste), ritzy restaurants all over the place and let the great part of the heart of the city go to waste and turn into urban blight are usually the people who instantly elect themselves as town representatives and welcoming comittees. I know, I know, it's an old, tired gripe, but hey, it's still true. So you can't blame some people for thinking Sacramento is weird. Sacramento itself can't decide what Sacramento is.

so, what are the pluses?

nice people, trees, rivers, cultural diversity in the outside areas of town, warm summers, fresh tomatoes everywhere, cost of living used to be a plus. not no more tho.

i'm grossed out that he put the twisted sign up on his site. i hate that sign!

in addition to what Alice wrote:

And I'm referring to downtown...

Decent local music scene (although no decent touring bands come through town), Zelda's pizza, being able to run into someone you know almost everytime you leave your door, being able to walk places, neat older houses, good microbreweries, the Tower and Crest theaters, people in Sacramento's sense of humor, perfect spring and fall...

Cons:

What Chris wrote and... poor public transportation, cost of living, too many friggin SUVs, not enough mid-range eateries, crappy basketball team, no good record stores (anymore...thanks Dan and Heather)

one of the only things Sacramento doesn't have going for it is the lack of communication between city officials and the average citizen.

perhaps some of it isn't even communication. but, for whatever reason, the city government cares very little for the development that matters to us little people.

the whole rest of it is pretty bitchin if you ask me.

that's a good point katy. it seems the city officials don't give much of a hoot about what the peeps want. but, maybe if i went to a city council meeting i'd feel differently. i guess i should get off my ass and do that.
